Achieving Sustainable Construction

Transport and craneage provide their own problems in the logistics of timber frame construction. All panels are manufactured with lifting eyes located to allow efficient and easy handling.Panels may be up to 12m long but are generally reduced to a 2.6m maximum width to allow road transportation. Access for the delivery of panels and the location of a crane are paramount.

  • Located in one position the crane is able to reach the stored panels and their final locating point. Sometimes several crane locations may be required.

  • Panels when filled with Warmcel are generally stored undercover. In most instances a breather membrane is factory fixed to wall and roof panels to protect them during transportation and erection. Protection of the panels once erected is important and remains the responsibility of the Site Manager.

  • Arrival of roof panels at even the tightest cul-de sac is often possible. In this instance a small ‘City’ crane was utilised in order to locate the panels.

  • Loading 11m roof panels at the factory in Appleby for transportation to Dunbar in Scotland.

  • An articulated wagon waiting to leave Appleby Factory. Covered wagons are not generally used due to the difficulty of lifting panels out by crane. Panels are nearly always loaded by fork-lift truck.
